Electricity Name Change in Hyderabad: How to Transfer a TGSPDCL Connection to Your Name

By Anshul Singhal, Co-Founder and EditorPublished Sources checked September 25, 20266 min read
Quick answer

To change the name on a Hyderabad electricity connection, apply to TGSPDCL for a title transfer with your registered sale, gift or partition deed, ID proof, and an indemnity bond on ₹100 non judicial stamp paper. Clear any arrears first. Heirs add the death certificate and legal heir certificate. NRIs can apply through an attorney.

Why the name on the bill matters

Many buyers keep paying bills in the previous owner's name for years. It seems harmless until something goes wrong. The name on the connection decides who can apply for a load change, who receives the security deposit refund, who is contacted about arrears or theft of power, and whose name appears on a document that tenants, buyers and banks treat as supporting proof of occupation. A mismatch also slows down your own sale later, because buyers' lawyers ask why the connection was never transferred.

Which company serves your property

Most of Hyderabad and its surrounding districts are served by the Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited, now branded TGSPDCL (formerly TSSPDCL). Parts of northern Telangana fall under TGNPDCL. Your bill shows the company, the service connection number and the category, for example LT Category I for domestic use.

Documents you need

TGSPDCL publishes its title transfer forms and document list on its downloads page. The company later announced a simplified list for domestic (LT Category I) and non domestic (LT Category II) consumers applying online.

The application process

  1. Check for arrears. Pay any dues on the connection first. Applications are routinely held up by old unpaid bills.
  2. Download the indemnity bond format from TGSPDCL, print it on ₹100 non judicial stamp paper, fill it in exactly as shown, sign it and affix your photograph.
  3. Apply on the TGSPDCL website or at a customer service centre, uploading the registered deed, ID proof and indemnity bond.
  4. Pay the application fee. TGSPDCL announced a fee of ₹25 plus GST for the simplified title transfer; confirm the current amount when you pay.
  5. Track the application and keep the acknowledgement. When the company announced the simplified process, it set an internal standard of 7 days to update the billing system once an application is approved.
  6. Check the next bill to confirm your name now appears.

Special cases

Joint owners

If the property is jointly owned, the connection can be transferred to one owner. The other owners give a no objection certificate in the prescribed format on ₹10 non judicial stamp paper.

Transfer to a legal heir

After an owner's death, heirs upload the death certificate and a legal heir certificate along with the usual documents. If there are several heirs, the others give NOCs in favour of the heir taking the connection.

Seller cannot be traced

Under the simplified route, the previous consumer's signature is not needed. Your registered deed and the indemnity bond carry the application. The indemnity bond is exactly what protects TGSPDCL, which is why it must follow the prescribed wording.

Tenants

A tenant cannot transfer the connection into their own name through a title transfer. Title transfer follows ownership.

How NRIs do it without travelling

The online route helps, but NRIs often run into practical obstacles: arrears that need to be settled in person, stamp paper that must be bought in India, and follow up with the section office. A relative or a professional acting under a registered Power of Attorney can handle the whole process. Probity's electricity name change service does this end to end for NRI owners, including arrears resolution and the indemnity bond.

If you have just bought the property, schedule the name change along with your other post purchase tasks: mutation, property tax records and updating the apartment association's register.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fee for electricity name change in Hyderabad?

TGSPDCL announced an application fee of ₹25 plus GST for the simplified title transfer. Any arrears on the connection must be paid separately. Confirm the current fee on the TGSPDCL website when applying.

Can I change the name on my electricity bill online in Telangana?

Yes. Domestic and non domestic consumers can apply for title transfer on the TGSPDCL website or at a customer service centre by uploading the registered ownership document, ID proof and the indemnity bond.

What if the previous owner will not sign the transfer form?

Under TGSPDCL's simplified process, the previous consumer's signature is not required. A registered ownership document in your name and the indemnity bond on ₹100 non judicial stamp paper support the application.

How long does a TGSPDCL name change take?

TGSPDCL set an internal standard of 7 days to update its billing system after approval. In practice, allow a few weeks, especially if there are arrears or document queries.

Can an heir transfer a deceased parent's electricity connection?

Yes. Upload the death certificate and legal heir certificate with the other documents. Where there are several heirs, the others provide NOCs in favour of the heir taking the connection.
